Down memory lane with Taiwanese singers

A good song, like good wine, gets better with age. That is why evergreen tunes such as Yi Yan Nan Jin (loosely translated as No Way Out), Ai Ru Hu Sui (Love Like Lake Water), Guo Huo (Excessive), Ba Bei Shang Liu Gei Zi Ji (Leaving the Heartache for Myself), Te Bie De Ai Gei Te Bie De Ni (Giving a Special You a Special Love), Jiu Bai Jiu Shi Jiu Duo Mei Kwei (999 Roses), Wei Dao (Flavour) and Ni Zhen Me She De Wo Nan Guo (Are You Willing to See Me Miserable?) continue to be played and enjoyed by music lovers throughout the years.

Fans will have the chance to hear these beautiful tunes performed by their original singers at the e-Century Love Songs concert at Stadium Putra Bukit Jalil on June 4.

The concert organised by Ocean Entertainment will feature Taiwan抯 top crooners Jeff Chang, Phil Chang Yu, Sky Wu, Bobby Chen Shen, Huang Pin Yuan, Tai Zheng Xiao and Winnie Hsin.

Chen and Phil were in Kuala Lumpur recently to promote the concert.

Phil said that the concert is a must see.

揑t is not easy getting the seven of us to perform together as we are all busy with our own things. If you miss out on it, you抣l probably regret it,?he said in Mandarin cheekily. 揑t is guaranteed to bring back some wonderful memories for the audience.?nbsp;

Chen commended Ocean Entertainment for organising the concert.

He said: 揕ooking at the ticket prices, I抦 concerned at the risk they are taking. This is not a charity show. In addition to artistes?fees, there are also payments to the musicians, make-up artists and stylists. The organiser may be taking a risk.

揝o when there are people willing to put up with the money to stage such a concert, we wouldn抰 be doing them justice if we didn抰 do our best.?nbsp;

Aside from singing songs from their individual repertoire, they will also be performing duets during the concert. With the exception of Jeff and Sky Wu, none of the other five singers have sung together.

Chen and Phil were asked to pick which of their respective works was the century抯 best classic tune. Chen said that he was still not satisfied with any of his compositions. 揟hat is why I抦 still writing songs.?nbsp;

Phil said: 揝ongwriters are continuously working to improve themselves. When they look back, they will rarely feel that their past work is the best.

揊or me, it is not the singers who decide which is a classic song. It is for listeners to decide. We can only agree that these songs have left a mark on us.?nbsp;
